My mom's classroom caught a baby snake the other day. Initially they thought it was a corn snake, but the coloration was wrong for that species. So I was called and asked to identify it. Just got back from doing that, took a couple of my field guides with me. I've narrowed it down to one of three species: 1) Plains Garter 2) Common Garter 3) Brown Snake (yep, that's actually a species name, cool right?)

The vertical stripes make me think it's very probably a garter, I'm thinking Common, since the coloration is right and, of course, because they are the most common species, found all over 10 states at least, including Illinois. Fortunately, that particular species, though ill-tempered when first captured, tames very quickly. And you can totally feed the little ones earthworms. If it's a brown snake (probably isn't, given the stripes) you can also feed it snails and slugs.

Definitely not a venomous snake, given the shape of the head and the round pupils.

Also, if they still have it by the end of the school year, it gets to become my snake over the summer! I've always wanted a pet snake! (Never a python or a boa, because those aren't pets, they're extremely patient murder machines. When boas and pythons get big enough, and they will, they WILL try to eat you. Sorry folks, but snakes don't form bonds of affection, it's not in their nature. This is a scientific fact. Only the smaller ones are reliable pets.)
